Kompost 3
Martin Eberle – trumpet | Benny Omerzell – keys | Manu Mayr – bass | Lukas König – drums
At first glance the word „Kompost“ doesn’t conjure up the thought of a protean, fire-eating entity equally capable of rocking you to sleep or rocketing you into orbit . . . but wait a moment, let’s start on the surface. Organic, earthy, alive; a jumble of countless bits and smears from the king’s table and straight out the gutter, melted together into a single mass. A little funky. Sometimes a LOT funky. Kompost is all those things.
But look deeper, that’s where the action is. The closer you get to the center the more it heats up. Reactions are taking place, unknown quantities brewing. Musical ideas are broken down to their constituent atoms then fused together again in seemingly random combinations – but there’s method to this madness; the creatures emerging from this primordial ooze are walking, talking, preaching.
In concrete terms: this is a band the way bands are supposed to be. They’ve got it all: fire, sweetness, the ability to step on the one so hard that you nearly fall over, a seemingly inexhaustible flow of ideas and the best thing of all: real telepathy, the kind you hear about. Those impossible, jaw dropping, roller-coaster twists, turns and stops only work because each of these four heads knows what the others are going to do next. Don’t be fooled: this band is a monster. They’ll pull you in; don’t bother trying to resist. They’ll make you a part of themselves and won’t let go until THEY feel like it . . . but by then you won’t want to leave. (Philip Yaeger)
Info:
The four members of KOMPOST 3 have been making music together since 2009; a project that began in a shared apartment in Vienna’s Third District and has grown into one of the most exciting young formations of Austria’s jazz and improv scene. The band released 4 critically acclaimed albums, won the international Bremen Jazz Award and the BAWAG P.S.K. Next Generation Jazz Award and has been touring throughout Europe, in Mexico and in the United States.
Their upcoming album will be released in September 2018 and is once again a perfect example of the band’s ability to reinvent itself, while always being on the lookout for new sounds and musical expression free of any blinkered mindsets. The outcome is a groove oriented blend of mesmerizing soundscapes riddled with avant-garde and progressive elements which will keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Reviews:
“State-of-the-art jazz with a penchant for driving beats and fantastical composition. Highly recommended.” – Wiener Zeitung
“A delightful, inventive, risk-taking, entertaining, moving musical export from Austria, crowned with awards and esteemed highly by international audiences.” – DrumHeads
“…KOMPOST 3 creates bizarre, absurd musical landscapes. They use and abuse their instruments with such obvious enjoyment and imagination that one can only listen, smiling and shaking one’s head, eyes wide with delight like a kid allowed to open one present after another.” – Musikreviews
“In ‘Ballads For Melancholy Robots’ Kompost 3 has delivered an album that will definitely not go unnoticed. The quartet offers cinema on a grand scale, music that magically draws listeners in, captures them and doesn’t let go. A superb musical experience.” – MICA
“Rattling, blasted trash-funk grooves emerge, only to come under fire from noisy free interludes. The Hammond organ is unleashed, its mangy tubes made to howl. Meanwhile the trumpet gently meanders, its voice ascending now and then to joyous, soulful pathos, rising above all possible questions of taste. Cliché? Who cares? In their fresh, sassy manner, Kompost3 is following their own cannily chosen path.” Andreas Felber (Falter)
